Assisi, Umbria, Italy

Walked to the eastern edge of the town of Assisi. My trek to the Eremo delle Carceri, the Hermitage Carceri started from here.

The hermitage is all the way up on the slopes of Mount Subasio where San Francesco and his followers frequently stayed for their prayers and meditations.

Checking in the sign of "VIA EREMO DELLE CARCERI," I started making the trek to the Eremo delle Carceri, although I was not really sure if I could walk all the way to the hermitage.

But I was very excited and I started making a trek up Mount Subasio.

As I climbed up the hill, I stopped periodically to enjoy the great panoramic views of the Umbrian Valley and to check how high I had climbed.

I passed a few pilgrims on this climb and we greeted each other by saying "Hi." But having climbed for half an hour looking ahead, I began to think to myself, "How far more to climb up to San Francesco's Hermitage?"
On my way up, there was this crucifix on the side of the road.

I was so happy and felt rewarded when I saw a group of people in the distance by which I was sure that I'd finally made it through to the goal, the Eremo delle Carceri! It was a bit tougher than I thought it would be.

So here is the gate to the Eremo delle Carceri di San Francesco, the hermitage of San Francesco! The entry sign says, "EREMO DI SAN FRANCESCO."
