Assisi, Umbria, Italy

This is the Piazza del Comune, the main square, and the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, the Palace of the Capitano del Popolo. There were cafes and restaurants around the Piazza. I saw a number of friars and nuns here and there throughout the town. After a several-minute walk to the east, I reached the Piazza Santa Chiara. There I enjoyed the skyline of the western half of Assisi. The view from here was also wonderful.

So I entered the Basilica di Santa Chiara.
Chiara, Claire, was a follower and best friend of Francesco.

It holds the San Damiano Crucifix. In the crypt, I was quite amazed at Chiara's preserved body. Her clothing and relics are on display.

She lived a very simple life; she dedicated her life to God and people in need. It was very moving.

Outside, I sat and took a break at the Piazza Santa Chiara from which I could see the towering Rocca Maggiore in the distance.
